Are You Reacting to Life?

Acupuncture for Stress, Anxiety and Depression

One of the biggest things we lose when we are stressed, overwhelmed and exhausted is our sense of choice. Everything starts to feel like it is happening to us.

As you become more tired and more overwhelmed, life tends to accumulate problems faster than you can deal with them. That makes it even harder to choose the life you actually want.

Your sleep goes off.
The kids become a little more needy.
Your energy runs dry.
You don’t get any time for yourself.

So the things you do choose are often things that help wash away the overwhelm for a little while. A glass of wine as a reward. TV as an escape. Scrolling on your phone. Anything that creates a moment of relief. And honestly, that’s completely normal.

But for those people who know they want something different, the most common question is:

Where do I start?

“I’m already overwhelmed. I don’t need more things to do.” Again, completely normal.

The first thing to understand is that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You don’t need to overhaul your entire life. You simply need to understand what you’re doing, know how to measure progress, and keep moving forward. The benefits accumulate over time.

Each time you become a little less overwhelmed, you free up a little more energy. And that extra energy gives you the ability to make a different choice. So where do you start? Start by honouring the choices you’re making right now.

Acknowledge that at some level you are choosing the things you’re currently getting. The important part is not to judge yourself for it. The important part is to recognise the choice.

You get to choose to watch TV, you get to choose to have the wine. They may not lead to the outcome you ultimately want, but they are still choices. And when you can reconnect with the feeling of choice through intention, you start to regain your power.

From there you can begin creating something new. The key is to observe the choice without judgment. Change the internal conversation to one that is kind, compassionate and supportive. Then take action from that place.

Because the more choice you feel, the less you react to life and the more you start creating the life you actually want.
