The Stress Symptom Nobody Talks About

The Stress Symptom Nobody Talks About

Productivity… the badge of honour when it comes to stress.

Stress isn’t supposed to feel normal.
Yet for many people it has become exactly that.
Most people understand that chronic stress isn’t good for them, but the conversation usually sounds something like this:

“I’ll just get this done, then I’ll deal with the stress.”

Or

“I’m overwhelmed at the moment, but once things settle down I’ll start looking after myself.”

The problem is that things rarely settle down.

We’ve created an environment where chronic stress feels like a normal consequence of life. We rush from one appointment to the next. We race to pick the kids up from school. We tell our friends how busy we are, almost as though our busyness is proof that we’re successful or valuable.

Somewhere along the way, busyness became associated with productivity. Productivity became associated with value. And before we know it, slowing down starts to feel uncomfortable.

If being busy is what gives us value, then what happens if we stop?

At first that idea can feel a little uncomfortable or even seem untrue. But spend a week observing yourself and the people around you. Listen to how often conversations revolve around being busy. Notice how often people wear it like a badge of honour.

This matters because if you ever want to change the pattern, you first have to see it.

People come into the clinic with tight shoulders, poor sleep, low energy, digestive issues, lowered immunity, anxiety and overwhelm. They genuinely want to feel different, yet they often keep choosing the same behaviours that created the problem in the first place.

Why?

Partly because those behaviours are familiar, and familiar feels safe.
But also because those behaviours appear to give us something valuable. The downside is justified by the perceived benefit. So year after year the same cycle continues
.
If what your conscious mind wants and what your nervous system believes keeps you safe don’t match, the body wins.

The nervous system keeps sending the signal that you need to survive, and the mind simply reaches for the behaviours it already knows.

The goal isn’t to become less productive.

The goal is to become productive from a different place.

Maybe there’s a lot of wasted energy and unnecessary noise running through your system right now. Maybe your nervous system has become so closely linked to productivity that you feel like you have to stay switched on all the time just to get things done. But what if you could become more efficient instead? What if you could create the same outcomes with less stress?

As always, it starts with observation.

Simply ask yourself, is this true for me?
▪ Do I associate being busy with being productive?
▪ Do I associate productivity with my value?

If the answer is yes, then ask another question.

Why?

What am I actually trying to achieve?
▪ Is it freedom?
▪ Success?
▪ Purpose?
▪ Connection?
▪ Security?
▪ Value?

Because sometimes the emotion you’re chasing has very little to do with being busy. It’s completely normal for stress and busyness to build over time until they become your normal. They become your motivation. The thing that gets you moving each day… But they also become incredibly inefficient.

Over time we forget why we started. We become so focused on doing more that we lose sight of what we were actually trying to create.
▪ Balance creates efficiency.
▪ Efficiency creates sustainable energy.
▪ And sustainable energy creates long-term success.

So start by observing. Notice whether busyness has become your badge of honour. Get clear on the outcome you’re really trying to create. Look underneath that outcome and notice the emotion you’re hoping it will give you. Then ask yourself one simple question:

Does more busyness actually bring me closer to the life I want?

If the answer is “maybe not,” don’t judge yourself. Just become curious.
Look for ways to create a little more efficiency with your time, your energy, your thoughts and your effort. You don’t have to stop achieving. You don’t have to lower your standards.

You simply need to create your results from a healthier foundation.
The real badge of honour isn’t being busy. It’s having the energy to enjoy your life.
* It’s peace.
* It’s connection.
* It’s joy.
* It’s happiness.

Those things can exist alongside success. So don’t forget why you started.
Every now and then, lift your head up from the busyness and remind yourself what you’re actually working toward. You have a lot to offer the world.
Just remember to offer yourself the same care that you give everyone else.
That’s where balance begins. And balance creates the foundation for long-term, sustainable success.
