Emotions are often the glue that keep us locked into the same patterns.
Most people focus on changing behaviours, but behaviours are usually the result of beliefs. If we want a different outcome—whether that’s better health, less anxiety, more energy or greater happiness—we first need to believe that change is possible and that the action is worth taking.
Those beliefs come from many places: our upbringing, past experiences, successes, failures, trauma, family expectations and what we’ve learned about the world along the way.
Over time these beliefs create outcomes. Some serve us and some don’t. Attached to every experience is an emotional charge that we experience as a feeling or emotion.
As life goes on, we collect stories around those emotions. We remember the times we felt rejected, overwhelmed, angry, scared, valued, loved or successful.
Over time these stories help shape our beliefs about ourselves, our worth and what we expect from life.
The interesting thing is that the stories don’t just stay in our memory. The emotional charge attached to them often stays active within the system.
It might show up as anxiety, stress, tension, rumination, exhaustion, physical symptoms or simply feeling unsettled without really knowing why.
These stored emotional patterns can have a huge influence on how we think, how we make decisions, what we believe about ourselves and how we respond to life.
This is why there can be enormous value in finding and clearing stored emotional energy.
What you’ll often discover is that many different stories are connected to the same underlying emotion. Twenty different experiences may all reinforce the same feeling of fear, sadness, shame or inadequacy.
As that emotional charge begins to clear, all of the stories connected to it can start to lose their grip.
The stories may still be there, but they no longer carry the same weight.
And when the emotional charge reduces, the beliefs attached to those stories often become much easier to see, question and change.
Sometimes the biggest shift isn’t changing the story, it’s changing the emotion that’s been holding the story in place.
